Raster vs Vector: Understanding the Difference and Why It Matters for Print
When preparing artwork for print, choosing the right file format is essential to achieving sharp, professional results. The key distinction between raster and vector files can significantly impact print quality.
Raster vs Vector: What’s the Difference?
Raster Files (JPEG, PNG, TIFF, GIF)
- Made up of pixels
- Resolution-dependent (loses quality when enlarged)
- Best for photos, but not ideal for logos, solid and pattern fills or text-based designs
Vector Files (AI, EPS, PDF, SVG)
- Made up of paths and shapes
- Scalable without losing quality
- Ideal for logos, illustrations, and text-based designs
For the best print quality, always provide a vector file of your artwork. If you only have a raster file, ensure it is at the highest resolution possible (300dpi -600dpi).
How to Check if Your File is Vector
Not all files labeled as AI, EPS, or PDF are truly vector-based. Sometimes, a raster image is simply placed inside a vector file. To verify:
- Open your file in a PDF viewer or design software.
- Zoom in on the image.
- If the edges stay sharp, it’s a vector.
- If it becomes blurry or pixelated, it’s a raster.
What is a Vector File?
A vectorised file is a design that uses mathematical paths, ensuring clean, crisp edges and smooth curves. This means it can be resized to any dimension without losing quality. If your file isn’t vector, it will likely need to be redrawn or converted to meet professional print standards.
Why Vector Files are Best for Print
- Ensure sharp, high-quality prints
- Prevent blurriness or pixelation
- Allow for precise color adjustments and edits
- Allow for the set up of specialty colours like white ink, or finishes like foil
- Ideal for specialty printing techniques like foil, embossing, and die-cutting
