What “No-Label Look” Means – and What It Doesn’t
Clear vinyl labels are often described as creating a no-label look. In practical terms, this means:
- You can see the product or packaging through the label
- The label visually blends into the surface rather than sitting on a white background
- Branding appears lighter and more integrated than traditional labels
However, it’s important to note:
- These labels are not optically clear
- You will still see a clear label film, especially at edges or where ink is not printed
- This is not the same as printing directly onto packaging (such as screen printing, direct digital print, or mould-labelled packaging)
This transparency makes clear vinyl ideal for brands seeking a refined, minimal aesthetic—while still using a high-quality applied label.
Using White Ink
As with all clear labels, colours printed directly onto clear vinyl will appear semi-transparent. This can be an intentional and desirable effect—similar to a stained-glass look—where the colour blends with the product or packaging behind it.
If your design requires solid, opaque colours or clearly legible text, a white ink underlay is recommended. The white layer sits beneath selected areas of the artwork, allowing colours to appear stronger, cleaner, and more consistent regardless of what’s behind the label. You can also use white as elements in your design, or for the text itself.
When to Use White Ink
- You want solid text and design elements
- Your packaging or contents not white
- Colour accuracy and contrast are important
When White Ink May Not Be Needed
- You want a transparent or blended look
- You want a stained glass/ cellophane effect, where the colour changes based on what is behind it
- The item you are adhering to is a smooth white surface.
White ink can be applied selectively or as a full flood, depending on your design. If your artwork is supplied as vector files, we can add the white ink layer during setup to ensure the final result prints as intended.

Important note for skincare, aromatherapy, and solvent-heavy products: some natural oils and fragrance ingredients (particularly those found in essential oils) can lift, soften or stain printed inks. If your label will be exposed to these ingredients, we recommend a white base label and/or a protective laminate for maximum durability and scuff resistance.
