What is the difference between paperback and hardcover books?

Paperback books have a flexible printed cover, while hardcover books use a rigid board cover with a printed wrap. The internal pages and binding method can be the same in both formats.

Which is better: paperback or hardcover?

Neither format is universally better. Paperback and hardcover books serve different purposes depending on how the book will be used, presented, and distributed. Both formats are available from as little as one copy.

Are your paperback books perfect bound or PUR bound?

Our paperback books are perfect bound. PUR binding is typically used for very large or industrial publication runs and is not the focus of our book production.

Is hardcover more durable than paperback?

No. In our production process, hardcover and paperback books have the same durability. The difference is primarily in the cover structure and presentation, not the strength of the binding.

What finishes are available on softcover (paperback) books?

Softcover books can include:

  • Matt Laminate
  • Gloss Laminate
  • Velvet (soft-touch) Laminate
  • Metallic Ink
  • Foiling
  • Optional Dusk Jackets

These finishes allow paperback books to feel premium while remaining practical.

How are hardcover books finished?

Hardcover books feature a full-colour printed vinyl wrap, produced in-house using latex printing technology with water-based inks.

Can I print just one paperback or hardcover book?

Yes. Both paperback and hardcover books can be produced from as little as one copy, making them suitable for trials, proofs, or review copies.

Because the setup and processing for one book is similar to producing multiple books, the unit price reduces as quantities increase. If it suits your project, it’s often worth also requesting pricing for 2, 3, or 5 copies to see whether the lower unit cost provides better value.

What are trial books and who are they for?

Trial books are short-run or single-copy books used for:

  • Content and layout review
  • Finish and binding approval
  • Publisher or stakeholder review
  • Marketing photography and previews
They are commonly used before committing to a larger production run.

Is paperback cheaper than hardcover?

Paperback books generally have a lower production cost due to materials and construction. Hardcover books involve additional cover components, which increases cost.

Which format is better for self-publishing?

Paperback is often chosen for accessibility and affordability, while hardcover suits premium or keepsake editions. Both formats are available without minimum volume requirements.

Can the same book be produced in both formats?

Yes. The same internal pages can be used for both paperback and hardcover versions, allowing flexibility in how the book is offered.
